Texas A&M Horticulture Career Fair

The Department of Horticultural Sciences' Horticulture Career fair is an event held each year in the Horticulture building on west campus at Texas A&M University. The purpose of this event is to inform all students about possible jobs and internships within the Horticulture Industry. Furthermore, it is a chance for students to network with possible future employers to gain insight into what they do, as well as what they look for in a future hire. 

During my volunteer time at this event, I was stationed at the check-in table. In this position, my responsibilities included; handing out name tags, directing students to employers' tables, handing out and picking up surveys, and informing students about the event. Furthermore, I stayed after the duration of the event to help with tear down, where I collected name tags from employers. 

Through this event experience, I learned applicable principles that I can use in my future career as an event coordinator. The first aspect I learned from this event was the importance of having your volunteers informed of the set-up of the venue, especially when they are tasked with directing your guests. In fact, during this event, I received a map with where the employers were located, which left me better equipped to direct students. A second principle I learned from this event, was the importance of informing your volunteers about lunch breaks. Due to the fact, that during this event each employer had different lunch breaks set up with students. Thus, I had to be able to direct those students to the lunch area, as well as informing other students about when employers would be back at their booths. Finally, through this event, I learned that when receiving feedback, you want to so both from your guests attending the event, as well as from the people who you are hosting the event for.
